How it works

  1. Add the PDF you want to compress.
  2. Choose a quality level. Lower quality makes a smaller file.
  3. Select Compress and review. SumoPDF reports the exact before and after sizes; if the result is not smaller, it tells you so.

Limits

Browser-local. This works by flattening each page to a compressed image, so text and links become part of the image (no longer selectable or clickable). It is best for scanned or image-heavy PDFs; a text-only PDF may not get smaller. Beta limits: desktop up to 40 MB and 400 pages; mobile devices up to 15 MB and 150 pages. Password-protected PDFs are not supported.

Common questions

Is it safe to compress a confidential PDF file?

Yes, it is completely safe. The compression process happens entirely within your web browser. Your PDF is never uploaded to a server, so its contents remain private and secure on your own device.

How does this tool make the PDF file smaller?

This tool reduces file size by rebuilding the pages as compressed images. This method is most effective for scanned documents or PDFs that contain many large images. The visual quality is kept as high as possible.

Will compressing my PDF reduce its quality?

Because the tool works by compressing images, there may be a slight reduction in the visual quality of images within the PDF. For documents that are mostly text, the change is usually not noticeable.

Can I compress a PDF that is larger than 25 pages?

The free compression tool works for documents up to 25 pages long. To compress larger PDFs, you will need to subscribe to a paid plan, which does not have a page limit.
