How it works
Open the PDF.
Drag a box over each area to remove; use page controls and Undo.
Select Apply redactions & download. The marked areas are permanently removed.
Limits
Converted locally on your device. Your file is never uploaded to SumoPDF, and SumoPDF does not receive or store its contents. TRUE removal: any page you mark is rasterized (turned into an image) and rebuilt WITHOUT its original text layer, so the removed content is gone from the file, not just hidden. Affected pages become image-based, so their remaining text is no longer selectable/searchable. Export is irreversible. Beta limits: desktop up to 40 MB and 400 pages; mobile up to 15 MB and 150 pages. Password-protected PDFs are not supported.
Common questions
Is redacting a PDF with this tool truly secure and permanent?
Yes, the redaction is secure and permanent. The tool doesn't just place a black box over the content; it removes the underlying text and image data from the file. Since this happens in your browser, your sensitive document is never uploaded.
How do I redact information from my PDF?
After opening your file, you can click and drag to draw boxes over the text or images you want to remove. Once you apply the redactions, the selected content is permanently deleted from the new PDF you download.
Can someone uncover the information I have redacted?
No, once the redaction is applied and you download the new file, the information is gone forever. It cannot be recovered by copying and pasting or by examining the file's source code. The data is completely removed.
Can I redact information from a 50-page legal document?
The free tool allows you to redact PDFs up to 25 pages long. To work on a 50-page document, you would need to subscribe to our paid plan, which removes all page limits.
